Reiki is a complementary form of healing. We are all made up of energy and  energy flows around our bodies resulting in tiny electrical currents on a cellular level. These run the body and all its functions and these electrical activities in the body produces “bioelectricity”. This measurement of energy is now called bioelectromagnetism (BEM) (Gungor, M. 2005)

Energy levels have been measured since as early as 1936 (Burr) and can change daily. When we are unwell this energy level alters and rather than our energy flowing around our bodies with ease, it flows with “dis” ease. A Blockage or disruption in this flow may result in  normal physiological functioning of the body becomes impaired, allowing ever-present illness and disease (in the form of pathogens) to take hold over the weakened body (Gao, 1997) if balance is not attained this can result in death

The emerging perception of man in relation to the environment is that of an adaptable — but not infinitely so animal attempting to cope with myriad factors, each of which has potential physiological significance. (Dickey 1984) These factors may be internal such as a genetic predisposition, or external such as chemical substances in the air or water. Clinical disease may be viewed as a manifestation of the cumulative impact of these factors. It develops when the total load exceeds the individual’s adaptive capacity. (Rea et al 1976) The total-load concept applies to any factor that is inherently capable of eliciting an adaptive response. (Rea 1985)

If people are exposed to stress adaptive changes occur within the body. If the stress is maintained, people’s defences may break down resulting in a diagnosable disease or illness. This may be shown by the contraction of a disease, such as an infection (if a viral or bacterial agent are present in the environment), pneumonia (if its respiratory system is already weakened for other reasons) or depression if the conscious mind is “worrying or thinking about negative issues too much”.

If the stress continues or there is another stress applied such as being forced to live in cramped housing, bereavement, separation, new baby etc, these additional stressors lead to whatever disease or illness that is fated to develop (within that area of the body when it is stressed beyond its limit), to manifest into a disease more quickly, than if it experienced only one stressor. Many people therefore are more likely to be physically or mentally ill, where there is a high level of stress.

Psychodynamic Reiki Counselling works by identifying underlying areas of the body that are affected by stress, whether emotional or physical and rebalancing the energy flow back to the correct level. In additon where there are disruptions in the energy flow this can be felt as an anomaly in the clients energy field by the therapist. This then enables the therapist to help the client to open their subconcious in order to identify the stressor which caused this breakdown in correct flow in the first place. These two approaches when used together increase the effectivness over and above when they are used in isolation of each other

Objective: To determine whether Reiki, a process of transmission of healing energy, can significantly reduce microvascular leakage caused by exposure to excessive noise using an animal model.

Rationale: Reiki is beginning to be used in hospitals to accelerate recovery. Despite many anecdotes describing Reiki's success, few scientific studies are reported and none of those use animals. Animal models have the advantage over human subjects in that they provide well-controlled, easily interpretable experiments. The use of noise is relevant to hospital patients because of the excessive ambient noise in hospitals in the United Kingdom and United States. Loud noise can lead to several nonauditory disorders in humans and animals that impair recovery. In the rat, stress from noise damages the mesenteric microvasculature, leading to leakage of plasma into the surrounding tissue.

Design: One group of four rats simultaneously received daily noise and Reiki, while two other groups received "sham" Reiki or noise alone. A fourth group did not receive noise or additional treatment. The experiment was performed three times to test for reproducibility.

Outcome Measures: Average number and area of microvascular leaks to fluorescent albumin per unit length of venule.

Results: In all three experiments, Reiki significantly reduced the outcome measures compared to the other noise groups (sham Reiki and noise alone) (p < 0.01).

Conclusions: Application of Reiki significantly reduces noise-induced microvascular leakage in an animal model. Whether or not these effects are caused by Reiki itself, or the relaxing effect of the Reiki practitioner, this procedure could be useful for minimizing effects of environmental stress on research animals and hospital patients.

Another experiment using a Reiki like technique has also demonstrated its ability to increase haemoglobin values. Otelia a medical doctor, conducted an experiment with a group of 79 sick patients. Together the patients had a wide range of diagnosed illnesses including pancreatitis, brain tumour, emphysema, multiple endocrine disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, and congestive heart failure. Laying-on hands treatments were given to 46 patients with 33 as controls. The treated patients showed significant increases in haemoglobin values. The effect was so pronounced that even cancer patients who were being treated with bone marrow-suppressive agents which predictably induce decreases in haemoglobin values showed an increase. The majority of patients also reported improvement or complete disappearance of symptoms. (Increase in Haemoglobin Values – Otelia Bengssten MD Reiki Research Organisation)
